We scientifically define the particular USER(S), their TASK(S) and ENVIRONMENT of use. Then we evaluate how well the user experience supports the USER to "do what they want to do". Then we identify opportunities where the experience can be redesigned to provide the best experience.
After the user experience is redesigned, users are recruited to test the prototype. A Think-Aloud procedure lets the Usability Engineer know what the user is thinking. Most heffective usability tests are iterative, tweaking the design and retesting the experience to make sure that the redesign created the desired effect.
